BRIDGE Australia-Indonesia

Partner Teacher Visit 2012

May 2012 saw the official commencement of our BRIDGE School Partnership. We initially spent five inspiring days together with our BRIDGE Partner Teachers at a Professional Learning Forum in Melbourne. During this time, we gained a deeper understanding of and appreciation for each other's history, culture and contemporary way of life. We also learned how to create and manage a wikispace, as well as familiarise ourselves with an array of ICT tools to support ourselves on this journey.
Our Indonesian Partner School Teachers from MTS PSA Ta'allumul Huda, were warmly welcomed to Saint Catherine's Catholic College at a Civic Welcome Function. Members of the College Executive, Religious, Teaching and Administrative Staff, Parents, Students and Members of the Wider Local Community joined at the McAuley Hall to celebrate the arrival of our Partner School Teachers: Pak Purhendi and Bu Yovitha Fitriyani. The College String Ensemble made us very proud with their beautiful music. We were also most impressed by the professionalism shown by the TTC Hospitality class, who provided us with delicious refreshments.

Students from Kindergarten to Year Twelve made Pak Purhendi and Bu Yovitha warmly welcome with their beautiful smiles, waves and hellos all around the College. They especially enjoyed the opportunity to learn about Indonesia first-hand and to meet with Pak Purhendi and Bu Yovitha. Our students loved learning Indonesian songs, such as "Balonku ada Lima" and "Pelangi". They also enjoyed learning about Pencak Silat and how this relates to the Jaipong Dance. Younger students loved learning how to play an array of Indonesian games. Older students, who are learning about Islam in Studies of Religion sincerely appreciated the opportunity of being able to learn about the Pillars of Faith first hand.

It was wonderful to experience the generosity of spirit, open-heartedness and respectful engagement as Religious, Teaching and Administrative Staff embraced Pak Purhendi and Bu Yovitha as colleagues. The fact that we enjoyed such a successful Partner Teacher Visit is thanks to the generosity of all members of our big family at Saint Catherine's Catholic College. This is summed up beautifully in the words of Pak Purhendi's farewell speech: " When you share one smile, you get ten back!"
